They began as exponents of vocal-harmony surf music with Chuck Berry guitar riffs (their hits include Surfin' USA 1963 and Help Me, Rhonda 1965), but the compositions, arrangements, and production by Brian Wilson (1942-...) became highly complex under the influence of psychedelic rock, as in Good Vibrations 1966. Wilson spent most of the next 20 years in retirement but returned with a solo album 1988.
